Project GO - ROTC Language and Culture Programs

San Diego State University

Welcome to LARC at San Diego State University!

LARC at SDSU offers summer intensive classes in Arabic, Persian (Farsi), and Russian via Project GO funding from the Institute of International Education.

Project GO (Global Officers) is a collaborative initiative that promotes critical language education, study abroad, and intercultural dialogue opportunities for ROTC students. Project GO programs focus on the languages and countries of the Middle East, Asia, Central Asia, and Africa. Project GO provides scholarships to ROTC students in all services (Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and Navy), contracted or non-contracted, for language study domestically and abroad. Students may participate in Project GO programs regardless of the location of their home institutions.

A major obstacle to ROTC students taking courses in critical languages has been the heavy course loads that they typically take each semester, precluding their taking additional courses in language and culture. We address this by:

1) Hosting intensive summer classes to eliminate ROTC students’ scheduling difficulties;

View interview with former Arabic student

2) Integrating language and culture courses into the Military Science minor;

3) Offering fully online 2-unit conversational courses, designed to sustain language ability, in fall and spring semesters; and

4) Full tuition, course materials and living stipend (to cover room & board, living expenses, etc.) support for summer study at San Diego State’s Language Program or CSUSB’s Summer Arabic Program. ROTC students from other service branches may also apply for scholarships for either of these summer programs.

The ultimate goal is to institutionalize all intensive language courses and to build ROTC students proficiency through study abroad, either through SDSU or CSU programs, whichever program fits into the commissioning and proficiency-based career goals of ROTC students in the program. Students are pushed to reach ILR level 2, and those who do could pursue Flagship programs.

SUMMER 2012

Learn Arabic, Persian, or Russian through our unique intensive summer experience. Intensive language courses immerse you in language and culture studies for 4-6 hours of interactive instruction, Monday through Friday. You can earn 6-20 units of SDSU foreign language credit in 6-12 weeks.
