Welcome to the STARTALK Portuguese Summer Program at San Diego State University!
The Language Acquisition Resource Center at San Diego State University is delighted to announce the first year of its summer STARTALK Portuguese camp for elementary school children.
STARTalk Portuguese at LARC
The four-week summer camp is open to 15 motivated students in grades 3-5. The program is designed both for children with no prior exposure to Portuguese language, and for children who may understand or speak some Portuguese through growing up in a Portuguese-speaking home or community (heritage learners).
Children will gain insight into Brazilian culture while learning to communicate in the Portuguese language as spoken in Brazil. They will do so through a variety of age-appropriate, meaningful, and engaging activities relating to the theme “Celebrating Life: from Birthdays to Carnival.” The camp will be taught by two instructors who will use authentic materials, games, and activities that will engage children’s senses and creativity through innovative teaching methods and materials. In addition to being immersed in the Portuguese language, children will also participate in cultural activities such as capoeira (Brazilian martial art), Afro-Brazilian and samba dance, soccer, singing, and drumming.
